Embark on an unforgettable 14-day self-drive adventure through Central Mongolia and the Gobi Desert with Avis. This exhilarating journey takes you from the vibrant capital of Ulaanbaatar through diverse landscapes, ancient historical sites, and breathtaking natural wonders. Experience the freedom and thrill of off-road driving while immersing yourself in the serene beauty and rich culture of Mongolia. Buckle up and prepare for an epic adventure that promises to create lasting memories.
Your adventure begins in Ulaanbaatar, a city where modernity meets tradition. Here, you'll pick up your sturdy 4x4 vehicle from Avis, your trusted companion for the next two weeks. Leaving the bustling city behind, you’ll drive into the heart of Mongolia, a land of vast steppes, rugged mountains, and arid deserts.
The first leg of your journey takes you to Khustai National Park, home to the majestic Przewalski’s horses, the last wild horses on Earth. As you drive through the park, you'll witness these incredible animals roaming free across the open plains, a sight that harkens back to an ancient era.
From Khustai, you’ll continue to Elsen Tasarkhai, often referred to as the Mini Gobi. This unique region offers a stunning mix of sand dunes, lush vegetation, and rocky outcrops. Here, you can ride camels, hike through the dunes, and marvel at the contrast between desert and greenery.
Your journey then takes you back in time to Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. The ruins and museums of Kharkhorin tell the story of Genghis Khan’s vast empire, while the Erdene Zuu Monastery, built from the remnants of this once-great city, offers a serene retreat into Mongolia’s Buddhist heritage.
Driving along the scenic Orkhon River, you’ll reach the magnificent Ulaan Tsutgalan, or Red Waterfall. Surrounded by volcanic rocks and verdant landscapes, this natural wonder is the perfect spot for a picnic and a refreshing break.
Next, you’ll head to the natural hot springs of Tsenkher. Here, you can soak in the mineral-rich waters, renowned for their therapeutic properties, and relax amid the serene mountain scenery.
Venturing further south, you'll explore the ruins of Ongii Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia before its destruction in the 1930s. The hauntingly beautiful site, located on the banks of the Ongi River, offers a glimpse into Mongolia's spiritual past.
No trip to Mongolia would be complete without a visit to the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag. Renowned for their rich fossil beds and stunning red-orange hues at sunset, the Flaming Cliffs are where the first dinosaur eggs were discovered. Walking through this prehistoric landscape, you can almost feel the presence of ancient creatures that once roamed here.
From Bayanzag, your journey continues to the majestic Khongor Sand Dunes, the tallest dunes in Mongolia. Known as the “Singing Dunes” for the sounds they produce, these towering formations offer exhilarating climbs and breathtaking panoramic views of the Gobi Desert.
You’ll then explore Yolin Am, or the Vulture Valley, in the Gurvan Saikhan National Park. This deep, narrow gorge is home to ice fields that persist even in summer and offers a cool, refreshing experience in the heart of the desert.
The adventure continues to the White Stupa, or Tsagaan Suvarga, a stunning chalky cliff formation that resembles a white stupa. The breathtaking views and unique rock formations make this a must-see destination.
Your next destination is Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a picturesque granite rock formation in the middle of the desert. This area is rich in history and natural beauty, perfect for hiking and exploration.
As you head back towards Ulaanbaatar, you’ll stop at Terelj National Park. This beautiful park offers alpine scenery, iconic rock formations like Turtle Rock, and the Aryabal Meditation Temple. Spend the night in a traditional ger camp, experiencing Mongolian culture and hospitality.
Finally, you’ll return to Ulaanbaatar, where you’ll have time to explore the city’s vibrant culture, museums, and markets.
