For those of us working in the city, dining out often becomes the highlight of the day. After work, the best way to unwind is sharing a meal with loved ones. That’s how eating good food and becoming a bit of a foodie became such a big part of my life. While Ulaanbaatar offers incredible cultural experiences, its food scene is just as vibrant. For tourists spending a week here, good food is essential—you don’t want seven days of only Mongolian food, do you? So, here’s my guide to hidden gems and my favorite restaurants in Ulaanbaatar. My Personal Go-To Spots
Veranda Restaurant
Veranda is a true gem in Ulaanbaatar. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between cozy and elegant, making it a great spot for any occasion. Their Mon Beef Steak is a must-try for steak lovers—tender, flavorful, and simply the best in town. If you’re a seafood fan, their salmon is equally amazing, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture that’s unforgettable. The service is always top-notch, adding to the overall experience. After dinner, don’t forget to head downstairs to Fat Cat Jazz Club for live music (just make sure to book tickets in advance).
La Rosa Tapas & Tequila Bar
La Rosa is my go-to place every Friday night with friends. The vibe is unmatched, and their music is so good that sometimes I think I go just for the playlist! Of course, the food doesn’t disappoint either. Their beef quesadilla is my personal favorite from their variety of taco options, and it pairs perfectly with a margarita pitcher.
Apart from being a regular spot for Friday nights, its location in the city center near Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar makes it super convenient. I once celebrated a special occasion in their VIP room—a birthday—and it was one of the most memorable experiences. The cozy yet vibrant atmosphere, paired with amazing food and drinks, made it unforgettable. It’s truly the kind of place where you can eat, drink, and unwind without a care in the world.
DeQuattro’s Italian
Dequattro’s Italian is the new version of Rosewood, which used to be my favorite spot in town before it closed. While I miss Rosewood, Dequattro’s Italian has its own charm. The two-hall seating setup creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. Their food is excellent, and the lasagna? Easily the best in town. If you’re looking for Italian comfort food, this is the place to be.

Date nights are all about Western food, cozy vibes, and an atmosphere that lets you unwind and connect. Here are my top recommendations:
Il Fiore Italian Restaurant
Located on the 21st floor, Il Fiore offers more than just incredible food—it’s a whole experience. The breathtaking night view of the city sets the perfect mood, especially if you catch the sunset from their floor-to-ceiling windows. Their carbonara is a showstopper, made right in a massive wheel of cheese and served piping hot. Pair it with a glass of wine, and you’re in for an unforgettable evening.
WorldWine Vinotage Restaurant
For a cozy yet vibrant date night, World Wine Vinotage is a fantastic choice, with several branches scattered around the city. Their pastas are divine, and the wine selection is on point. My personal favorite pairing is the Domaine Sainte Marguerite Pinot Gris with creamy pasta—it’s perfect in every bite and sip.
Paul Bakery Mongolia
Paul recently opened in Ulaanbaatar about two months ago, and I remember the first few weeks—it was all the buzz with long lines just to get in. Being a Parisian chain, it quickly became a hot spot for locals and visitors alike. The atmosphere is truly the star of the show here, with stunning green decor that gives the room an elegant yet cozy charm.
While their Western food offerings are decent, Paul truly shines in the dessert department. If your partner has a sweet tooth, this is a must-visit spot. Their croissants, macarons, and cakes are all delicious. Personally, I think their desserts are the highlight of the experience, making it a perfect date night destination.

If you’re more of a beer fan, Brussels Belgian Beer Café is the place to be. With a wide variety of beers to choose from, it’s easy to find the perfect pairing for their hearty Pork Knuckle, Belgian Beef Stew, or crispy Fish and Chips. The atmosphere is lively but still cozy, making it an ideal spot for a casual yet memorable date night.
Fromagerie MACU
Fromagerie MACU is heaven for cheese lovers, but don’t let its diner-like appearance fool you—the mood here is warm and inviting. Their dishes are crafted with high-quality Mongolian and international cheeses, and every bite is a treat. Their Russian Borsh soup is a must-try, especially on chilly evenings. And for dessert, their seabuckthorn cake is something truly unique, showcasing a flavor you can only find in Mongolia.

Oriental Treasure Restaurant
This spot holds a special place in my heart for its authentic flavors. Their soup baozi dumplings are a delight—soft, flavorful, and deeply comforting. Every bite feels like a warm hug on a chilly day. What makes it even better is its location—just 50 meters from the State Department Store. So, before you head back home with your souvenirs, stop by Oriental Treasure for a meal you won’t forget. It’s the perfect spot to end your Ulaanbaatar adventure with a taste of Chinese culinary comfort.
Chili Shabu Shabu & Sushi
If you're dining with a group and everyone has different cravings, Chili Shabu Shabu & Sushi is the perfect choice. Some can indulge in their flavorful hot pot, while others can enjoy a variety of Asian favorites. Located in Shangri-La Center, it's an easy and flexible spot to stop by after shopping or before catching a movie. It's the kind of place where everyone leaves satisfied.

Situated on the 3rd floor of Shangri-La Hotel, Hutong offers an elegant setting for Northern Chinese cuisine. Their Peking duck is exceptional—crispy skin, tender meat, and an experience that rivals the best I've had in China. Dipping the succulent slices in sugar, adding the rich sauce, and wrapping them in delicate pancakes creates a symphony of flavors that's simply indescribable. Beyond the duck, their menu features a variety of top-notch Chinese dishes that showcase authentic flavors and culinary artistry.

Asiana Restaurant
Asianan is renowned for its lamb head, a dish that stands out for its rich flavors and cultural significance. If you’re looking to experience the best of Mongolian meat, this is the place to go. What makes it even more special are the half-yurt-style tables, which create an authentic and cozy dining experience. The ambiance perfectly complements the hearty dishes served here.
Modern Nomads
Modern Nomads is the go-to spot for traditional Mongolian comfort food. Their тойгны шөл (bone marrow soup) is a must-try, especially on cold days—it’s warm, nourishing, and deeply satisfying. Their khuushuur (fried dumplings) are another favorite of mine, with a perfectly crispy exterior and juicy filling. This restaurant embodies the flavors of Mongolia in the most comforting way.

Hoba Pizza
Hoba might be known for its pizza, but their burgers are a hidden gem. What makes them special is the homemade feel—they’re simple yet packed with flavor. Hoba’s fame for bread-making is the secret behind their standout burger buns. And if you’re in the mood for dessert after, don’t miss their ice cream—it’s unbelievably good and the perfect sweet ending to your meal.

Fat Hen Chicken takes burgers to the next level, offering options from spicy to juicy that cater to every craving. Their creamy garlic or mayo sauce is simply unforgettable—just thinking about it makes my mouth water! Whether you’re looking for a casual bite or a meal to indulge in, Fat Hen’s burgers deliver every time.
Japanese Food Must-Try Spots
Sakura Bakery Cafe
Sakura is a true treasure in Ulaanbaatar. Run by a Japanese family for years, their menu may be small, but every item is thoughtfully crafted. From udon and karaage to tonkatsu and a few sandwiches, you can’t go wrong with any choice. And don’t skip their cakes—they’re as delightful as their main dishes. Honestly, I feel like they serve the best rice in the whole city. The simple yet authentic flavors make the wait in line absolutely worth it.
Sen Izakaya
As someone with a seafood allergy, it says a lot that Sen Izakaya is the only place I’m willing to risk it for (with my allergy pills in hand). Their sushi is next level, and my friends always rave about their tempura and other dishes. What really makes Sen special, though, is its atmosphere—at night, the vibe is an unmatched 10/10, perfect for a cozy dinner. If you’re visiting during lunch, their lunch sets are also excellent, offering a great balance of taste and value. Whether it’s day or night, this is a spot you don’t want to miss.
Matcha Cafe & Dining
If you’re a matcha fan, Matcha Cafe is an absolute must. Their karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and gyudon (beef bowl) are incredible. Pair them with a matcha latte, and you’ve got yourself a comforting and satisfying meal.
Nagomi Restaurant
Located in Central Tower, Nagomi is one of my favorite spots for a quick and satisfying meal, especially during lunch breaks. Their daily lunch sets offer a great variety and are perfect for a quick yet delicious break in your day. If you’re a sushi lover, their sushi sets will not disappoint—fresh, beautifully presented, and absolutely satisfying.
When I’m under the weather, their tori no mizutaki (chicken hot pot) is my ultimate comfort food—it always helps me sweat out a cold. On regular visits, I often go for their egg yakisoba, tonkatsu, or karaage. Each dish is consistently delicious, with attentive service that makes dining here a pleasure.
If you're looking for something a bit more high-end, just inside Nagomi is Sakura Restaurant, where the head chef of Nagomi creates incredible dishes right in front of you. It’s a private dining experience with a multi-course menu that’s perfect for business lunches or special occasions. Their wagyu beef is unforgettable—every bite is a treasure. I still remember when my little brother was invited to be a sous chef during one of the performances, helping light up the steak with fire. Their engagement with customers is truly next-level, making the meal as much about the experience as it is about the food.
Korean BBQ
Ulaanbaatar is a haven for Korean food lovers—you can find it on nearly every block, from casual spots like ddukbokki shops to more upscale restaurants like Yuna and Sura. But when it comes to samgyeopsal (Korean BBQ), I have two go-to places that never disappoint.
Zalaat BBQ
Zalaat BBQ is my staple when I’m craving authentic samgyeopsal. The charcoal-grilled meat adds a smoky richness that’s hard to beat. The restaurant is always lively, filled with locals and Koreans alike, which speaks to its authenticity. Their samgyeopsal paired with a bottle of soju is the perfect combination for a classic Korean BBQ experience.
Saemaeul Mongolia
This newly opened gem has quickly become a favorite. Run by a master chef, their 3-minute kimchi jjigae is an unforgettable dish—rich, spicy, and bursting with flavor. While the portions might feel a bit smaller, the meat quality and flavor are top-notch, making every bite worth savoring. It’s a place that leaves you wanting more in the best way possible.
Indian Cuisine
Hazara Restaurant Ulaanbaatar
Indian food is always better when shared with a group, don’t you think? For me, it’s the perfect way to enjoy a variety of dishes—some fluffy naan paired with rich, flavorful curries. And Hazara is the place to go for that. Their butter chicken is, hands down, the best in town. It’s creamy, perfectly spiced, and just irresistible. I can easily order two portions of butter chicken and finish it all by myself—it’s that good! Pair it with their garlic naan, and you’ve got a meal that feels like pure comfort. If you’re in the mood for similar dishes, you can’t go wrong with paneer tikka masala, chicken tikka masala, or dal makhani. Hazara truly brings North Indian flavors to life in every bite.
Vegetarian Options
Agnista Restaurant
Agnista is one of those places that makes even a meat lover like me appreciate vegetarian food. The vibe is warm and inviting, and their dishes are packed with flavor. I remember trying their vegan dumplings and being genuinely surprised—they were so good I almost forgot they were plant-based! Their lentil curry and vegan cheesecake are also worth mentioning. Green Zone is my top choice for brunch, especially if I’m planning to visit the Zanabazar Museum afterward—it’s just next door! The lasagna is hearty and satisfying, while their soups are flavorful and comforting. I recall a sunny morning when I enjoyed their English breakfast; the sausages had a delightful German twist, making the meal both familiar and novel.
Sunnyside Modern Eatery
Sunnyside has become my go-to spot for Sunday brunch. Their omelets are fluffy and packed with fresh ingredients, and the ciabatta sandwiches are a perfect blend of crunch and flavor. What truly sets them apart is their fresh orange juice—a rarity in the city. I remember my first visit; the warm, inviting atmosphere made me feel right at home, and the friendly staff added a personal touch to the experience.
Bites Ulaanbaatar
If you’re a bagel fan, Bites is your dream come true. Their bagels are freshly made, with a delightful chewiness that pairs perfectly with a mimosa. The cozy ambiance feels like a slice of New York in Ulaanbaatar. I fondly recall a lazy Saturday morning spent there, savoring a classic lox bagel while watching the city bustle outside—it was a little moment of bliss.
ROC Caffeine Bar
ROC is my go-to spot for coffee beans, but their food is just as impressive. Whether it’s their expertly brewed coffee or their thoughtfully prepared dishes, ROC never disappoints. I often find myself lost in a good book there, the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans enveloping me, making it a haven for both work and relaxation.
